WTF is Neurofeedback?

There was a time when I asked myself this very question.

"What is it?" is surely an important question. 

But what was more important was what neurofeedback could do for me?

What did Brain Training Do for Me?

Here is my story:

I've always been a seeker.  Looking to learn and apply ways to feel better, do better.

Years ago, this way of being led me to participate in a 5-day bike rally from Toronto to Montreal, where I experienced some pretty major personal epiphanies.

Which then led me into pursuing personal therapy... which resulted in more and more epiphanies.

And eventually, I made the leap to go back to school to pursue a second career as a psychotherapist.

But if there's one thing I learned after all these years it's this:

There isn't one answer to everything.

There could be many ways to solve one issue/challenge/problem and sometimes what ends up working is something that's not widely known or understood.

And isn't this something that can be said of this time in human history?

Now more than ever, we all know that technology has solved many issues, challenges and problems.

So when I learned about neurofeedback, I was very intrigued.

It's technology that can provide information about the brain's activities, which the brain can then use to train itself to function better.

Of course, there's a bunch of other explanations that can be given about it, but the short of it is: 75% of users have reported improvements, shifts and changes as a result of neurofeedback brain training.

For me, it has helped me with mental fatigue, more restful sleep, increased creativity, and less of getting stuck in unhelpful thoughts. 

My partner trained at the same time and he experienced an increased ability to concentrate better, an amplified enjoyment of music, as well as a more regulated sleep schedule. 

Due to both of us experiencing a greater sense of overall ease, our relationship has also improved.


Do Better, Be Better.

I consider it this way: If psychotherapy is training for the mind, neurofeedback is training for the brain. 

I also don't believe that the process of improving oneself is 'correcting deficiency'. 

Rather, thanks to our understanding of neuroplasticity, we now know that we can experience continued growth and betterment well into our octogenarian years and beyond.
